Vertigo 42

Vertigo 42 was originally a viewing gallery in the old Natwest Tower but has since been transmuted into one of the most arresting and dramatic venues in London. At 600 feet above the pavements, Tower 42 dominates the City skyline, and as you step out of the speedily ascending lift onto the top floor and drink in the dizzying bird’s eye views from the eyrie-like space that is Vertigo42, it becomes very clear that this champagne bar was aptly named. With a design scheme orchestrated by Graham McMullen which encompasses floor to ceiling windows, floor to ceiling mirrored wall panelling, and a 270 degree panorama of the cityscape that includes landmarks like the Tower Bridge, London Eye and Houses of Parliament, enjoying a crisp glass of bubbles will have you literally feeling like you’re on top of the world.

Before you sink into one of their plush leather seats, you’ll be greeted by Vertigo42’s excellent manager Stephane, who has worked at the venue for the better part of its existence and will ensure that you enjoy yourself to the upmost. There’s a fantastic range of champagnes, from glasses of Brut Gallimard at £14 to magnums of Krug ‘Clos du Mesnil’ 1990 for a cool £820, and also a selection of champagne cocktails including the Kir Royale and the Classic Champagne Cocktail. Recently, Vertigo42’s management have been collaborating with mixologists from Diageo to create a new line of bellinis with groundbreaking flavours like yuzu with cranberry, or raspberry, passion fruit and cacao.

The bar food is surprisingly good and a great complement to the champagne. Inspired by the flavours from Rhodes 24 (a downstairs neighbour), the menu offers delicious small plates like risotto with Jerusalem artichokes, scallops with cured ham, chicken Caesar tarts, goats cheese tarts and a selection of British cheeses.

For a business meeting that’s a soaring success, a spectacular date, or an auspicious aperitif we really can’t recommend Vertigo42 enough.
